How to Start and Grow a Successful Facebook Patient Support Group

We’ve been receiving questions in the Social Media Network discussion forum about the best way to start and grow patient support groups on Facebook. The platform has come a long way since Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook would put time and resources into improving groups. Although there are many community management programs out there with more bells and whistles, it’s hard to beat free.

It's important to realize that there’s a very, very big difference between managing a Facebook page and a Facebook group.

This webinar will share the key steps you should take before you start a Facebook support group, how to manage your community — including focusing on activity rather than numbers and how to deal with difficult members — and some specific ways you can generate ROI from your group.

If there are others in your organization, such as nurse managers or service line directors, who are responsible for support groups, invite them to join you for the webinar.

Hello, Dr. Grayson: I think I answered part of this question during the webinar, but not all of it. There really are two questions here — should you correct the information and should you correct the individual. Both depend on your rules and policies. You should explain them in the description section of your Facebook group and also in a welcome post pinned to the discussions. Internally you should decide what advice could be harmful, and what is harmless enough to let it go. Then state a guideline and remind people when they cross it. The second one hints at managing difficult members. If someone has agreed to the rule/guideline and violates it, then you start with a public warning and escalate it by hiding, deleting, suspending comments, banning and/or removing the member from the community. Hi Janet @msjanetp. Sorry I didn't answer the first part of your question in my response during the webinar. Whether to start your own group or access an existing group depends on your resources and relationships. If you can develop a relationship with an existing group that includes the people you're trying to contact, that would be an effective approach. However, some group managers are reluctant to invite researchers into their organization for a number of reasons. If you start and grow your own group you definitely have more control over the activities within the group, so you're in a stronger position. But that will take longer and involve more investment than simply piggy-backing on another group. Let me know if you have more questions. Dan

What do you do when you need to wind down a Facebook group and your participants are still in need of this service?

Do you have a couple of senior members who might be able to take the group over in order to keep it going? Folks who have dealt with the condition and have come out on the other side – or at least reached a "new normal" – and have started to take newer members under their wing?

Agree with Dan here. I was unfortunately not able to make the rescheduled event, but looking forward to checking out the replay. No one wants to have to delete posts or ban members – but from personal experience, a few bad apples can really make your group go off the rails, and it will affect the experience of *everyone* in the group.
