Cincinnati-based Catholic Health Partners is the largest healthcare system in Ohio and one of the largest in the country. CHP operates more than 100 organizations, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, hospice programs and wellness/ fitness centers, and a health insurance plan. CHP has more than 32,000 employees and 5,500-plus affiliated physicians.
Five Catholic organizations co-sponsor 26-year-old CHP, which operates as Mercy, Mercy Health, Mercy Health Partners, St. Rita’s Health Partners, Community Mercy Health Partners and Humility of Mary Health Partners. Several of those organizations have been using Facebook, Twitter and YouTube in recent years to connect with key audiences.
In 2011, CHP instituted a system-wide social media policy and began implementing a strategic social media plan. The strategy includes Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google+ and blogs. CHP formed a Social Media Champions! team of social media practitioners from across the system. Team members share best practices and lessons learned in monthly conference calls. They have had two annual social media summits, one with a national speaker and author.
In 2012, a multi-disciplinary Social Media Task Force revised the policy and developed a comprehensive internal education plan about the policy and business uses of social media. Plans call for developing a Social Media Center of Excellence.
CHP sent one person to the Health Care Social Media Summit and Social Media Health Network meeting at Mayo Clinic in 2011 and five in 2012. We have benefitted greatly from the connections made through the Network.
