Posted by @DanHinmon, Jun 3, 2016

The headline speaks for itself. Do your best to avoid some of these real social media disasters. One recurring problem – hopping on trending hashtags without understanding the context.

Do you have any to add?

Although those are US-based, unfortunately us Aussies also have plenty of examples to look to for phenomenal fails.

A similar disaster to the ‘McD Stories’ debacle, this Twitter campaign for Qantas didn’t go down as planned:

Another great one from Down Under was when one of our national supermarket chains decided to leverage off Anzac Day (like our version of Memorial Day) and it went terribly. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-04-14/woolworths-under-fire-for-anzac-promotion/6392848

Although trying to capitalise on a solemn, reflective holiday would seem like an obvious thing to avoid to most, I did feel for the marketing/social teams when this happened, the beat up about it was enormous.

Thanks @smccormick for these other terrific examples. Among my favorite tweets: #LuxuryQantas a cookie is not a meal it’s a joke. How many times have I wanted to say that to the flight attendant? Thinking twice, three and four times before launching promos should be the first line of a strategic planning document. Who else wants to share a #socialmediafail?
