Instagram ranked worst for young people's mental health

Posted by @DanHinmon, May 25, 2017

Instagram is the most damaging social network to young people’s mental wellbeing, and causes feelings of inadequacy and anxiety, according to a survey of around 1,500 14- to 24-year-olds.

According to the research, young people say four of the five most-used platforms — Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram — make their feelings of anxiety worse. Only YouTube was found to have a positive impact.

Is your hospital or health system publishing content on social that could negatively impact young people’s mental well-being?

This story has stayed with me–“In a recent survey conducted by the Girl Scouts, nearly 74 percent of girls agreed that other girls tried to make themselves look ‘cooler than they are’ [whatever that means] one social networking sites.”

Do you have any personal experience with social impacting young people’s mental health @sheridonaldson? Are you doing any social marketing towards youth?

My personal experience is only anecdotal…I can remember my niece graduating from high school in 2001 and saying she was looking forward to staying in touch with all her friends. She had many friends but many of them were going away to college and I asked her, “how are you going to do that?” and she breezily replied, “Oh, through email.” How much has changed…
