Google Hangouts API gets hung out to dry

Posted by @DanHinmon, Mon, Jan 9 9:16am

Last week Google quietly revealed that it will shut down the Hangouts API, preventing new apps from being built and shutting off existing apps on April 25th.

With the API shut down, it’s one-step closer to being just a video version of the traditional business call.

Thanks to @westr for pointing us to this article. He wrote, “I think this is important. Not just the eventual loss of Google Hangouts itself, but the SPEED with which social media is evolving.”

…And yet somehow Google+ still exists?

I remember when healthcare social media experts touted Google hangouts as a way to do a live chat with an expert. Although I never used it this way, I participated in a couple of professional-oriented hangouts. Why use it now in your social media efforts if you could use Facebook Live, a platform that most of your audience is probably already comfortable with?

Good question @MeganRowe. The Mayo Clinic social media team still uses Google Hangouts for our weekly strategic meetings (5 of us work away from Rochester and sometimes Lee is traveling), and it’s the platform for our monthly webinars. It gives us the ability to control the audience, whereas Facebook Live is public.

If Google Hangout goes away, does anyone have suggestions for a free/cheap alternative for these uses? Looks like we need to be exploring other options.

I saw something pubished about Blab being revived (under another name?), but as you know it was originally limited to 4 simultaneous users.

Agree. I quit using Google+ a LONG time ago. I bet they pull the plug on it soon.
