DIY Masks: Worth the Risk? Researchers Are Conflicted

As hospitals and clinics face dwindling supplies or run out of masks, some hospitals have put out public calls for mask donations.

At Phoebe Putney Health hospital in Albany, Georgia, staff members and volunteers have been working overtime to make face masks that might provide protection against COVID-19. Using a simple template, they cut green surgical sheeting into half-moons, which they pin and sew before attaching elastic straps. Deaconess Health System in Evansville, Indiana, has posted instructions for fabric masks on their website and asked the public to step up and sew.

Have you ask for the public's help sewing masks? How will you use them? What response have you received?

We've been asked non-stop about this since Friday afternoon. We're working on a decision. I'll be sure to share this link with leadership. The public really wants to help, there has to be a way to channel this positive energy.

@RandallPost. Can you ask a question about this in our discussion forum? Maybe we can find out if others are doing this. Providence made a big splash in the Seattle area asking for help sewing 100 million masks, but I see their website now says:

"Thanks to an overwhelming response from our community, many individuals have volunteered to sew surgical masks for us. However, we’re pleased to report that local manufacturing companies have stepped up to rapidly produce masks and face shields for us on a large scale.

"As a result we do not need volunteers to sew masks for our caregivers, and we will not mail or distribute sewing kits next week. Please do not come to our offices in Renton, Wash., next week. We are truly grateful for your willingness to help and will share information soon regarding other ways you can help."

I think there's a lot of confusion going on out there. Want to start the discussion?

We are in Northern NJ and the peak of the virus is just hitting us within the next 2 weeks. It's heading west from NYC. We are accepting donations of surgical masks, N95s and homemade masks to use in the non critical areas. We are still closely preserving our N95's, as the peak hits us we will run out quickly. Hospitals only 20 miles east of us are running out of N95s in the next 3 days, are already out of gowns, and are constructing new overflow rooms for COVID patients.
