Member Conference Call: Let's talk about apps!

Wed, May 24, 2017
12:00pm to 1:00pm CT

Description

Thanks to Rachel Miller (@rachelhm) for raising a great question in the community recently: Is your healthcare system using apps to connect/educate?

On Wednesday, May 24 at 12 noon CDT Chris Boyer (@chrisboyer) has agreed to lead a discussion about the pros and cons healthcare organizations can face when considering an app as part of their communication and marketing strategy.

Chris has launched a number of hospital apps and consulted with hospitals and physicians on their mobile efforts. He'll share the best way to consider an app, share effective design approaches and answer your questions.

Chris is a Platinum Fellow and founding member of the Mayo Clinic Social Media Network with more than a decade of experience supporting hospitals in their digital efforts.

Yep. @LeeAase posted the audio at this link: https://socialmedia.mayoclinic.org/discussion/can-we-talk-about-apps-lets-talk-about-apps/?pg=2. You’ll need to scroll down the page to Lee’s comments. Let us know what you think of the recording, @zanin.

@DanHinmon, thanks! Enjoyed it; wish I could have joined live. We’re (WellStar/Atlanta) in the final throes of deployment for our first app, as we couldn’t sell the suggested strategic checklist during intake. Note our website isn’t mobile friendly, so the whole “jumping into an app build before addressing the digital ecosystem” discussion is sore spot for me right now 😉

Just some details on how we went about the build if anyone finds it useful, as we went slightly off the beaten path:
We used Eachscape (RMAD platform) @ $1,250/month rather than MobileSmith (wasn’t happy w/ MobileSmith’s value – very limited tool for price) and leveraged existing web services from wellstar.org for the build, which cut down on time/cost.

FEATURES: driven by the most common/in-demand tasks from our website and some local consumer surveys.
– Find a doc or practice (by GPS or address)
– Schedule new appointments (for the providers that have opened them in Epic!)
– Check-in to Urgent Care and ER locations
– Get turn-by-turn directions
– Connect to our customer care team
– Access MyChart

By the numbers:
– This will be a completely custom/non-white label app for iPhone/Android
– Spent about $30K
– Five month build
– Single dev (85% LOE) and designer (15% LOE) tackled this, both existing FTEs

I’m incredibly proud of us, but to your point: it’s not going to be the silver bullet folks expect, and it was a huge time investment. I’m optimistic that we’ll see a slight brand lift by actually getting ourselves into the app stores.

Just a final thought: I’d love to see a follow up discussion on product launch and best practices around navigating the app stores and deployment. Any experiences with test flights and resulting iterations; internal and external launch tactics; some sample product-related creative used during launch, etc., would be incredibly helpful as our team gears up for that.

Thanks to all for sharing the love!

Very useful information, @zanin. Great details. I’m also curious about how you’re planning to drive adoption. Do you mind sharing? Looking forward to seeing your app!

@DanHinmon, glad to! Will follow back when I’ve something firmer to add. Starting with a phased internal roll out to nip any emergent issues is goal #1.

Hello! I attended this session and was wondering if anyone had any examples of existing “Best in Class” healthcare system apps. We’ve done some research and have come up with ideas of what features we’d like to include in the app we are going to build, but we are having a hard time finding existing examples. Any thoughts?

Good question, @dianebielo. There is a discussion in the community with some ideas about this. https://socialmedia.mayoclinic.org/discussion/more-on-apps-creating-a-list-of-hospital-sponsored-apps/ Feel free to ask your question there as well.
