Social Media Learning Conferences

Posted by Linda Kortanek @lkortanek, Sat, Mar 30 6:45am

Changing from a practice management role which include marketing, to only doing marketing -social media for my medical practice. Will be looking for conferences to learn more – anyone been to the Social Media Shake Up Show? http://www.socialshakeupshow.com/

Hey Linda! I've never been to the Shake Up Show, but we're planning the MCSMN Annual Conference and registration will open soon! Save the date: Oct. 22 & 23. Our Residency will be on the day before the conference, Oct. 21. Hope to see you there!

For social media within healthcare, it will tough to beat the MCSMN conference as a cornerstone conference – not only will you get the content benefit, you will also make a fair amount of connections there which will expand your backdoor knowledge network – however it sounds like you want to get started right away. If you want something now, consider https://socialmediacamp.ca – Canadas Largest Social Media conference. It starts in three weeks, and it is excellent for general social media – and it's not expensive, and it's in Victoria British Columbia which is quite beautiful this time of year. Another option if you haven't done it yet is take Mayo's online course and write a list of your top 5 questions and post them here. You will be hard pressed to ask a question here in which someone doesn't have experience or insight they WANT to share.

MCSMN conference was the first one I went to and it was great – especially as a beginner in social media and in health care.

I am headed to the Social Shake Up this year and am excited for what I'll learn, but I've often also found a lot of what is presented at the larger social conferences don't really work for health care. You have to come in with a different mindset and choose your sessions wisely.

That was my initial impression and why I asked the question. I have done reg [other than social] healthcare marketing for 20 years – so I do understand there are differences. I really want to focus on medical conf. Thanks for the post reply.

I am looking forward to it.

Hi, Linda,

I went to that conference last year. It was OK, but I found more value in the Mayo conference. I hear Ragan has a great conference here in Florida every year in February, so I may try to budget for that one next year, too.

@lkortanek The MCSMN offers more than a conference; it is an experience. The community is supportive. There is a session for everyone and every topic that you can think of. Not sure if there is another conference that will provide this type of experience.

Hi Linda,
Here is a list of select social media conferences coming up this year. I highly encourage you to attend Mayo Clinic's annual conference because it is specific to health care and social media. With your new, more targeted role, I think you'll find all the sessions and speakers directly beneficial to your work. https://socialmedia.mayoclinic.org/2019/04/10/2019-social-media-conferences/

Another place to keep an eye out for training (beyond the Mayos great webinars) are Hootsuite’s free webinars. Example April 24 Hootsuite Webinar are social data and the customer experience.

Thanks for asking this! I was looking up the same thing for conferences!

Has anyone been to the HCIC (Health Care Internet Conference)? Looks like it is more broadly digital marketing, but includes social while still being just for the health care community. https://hcic.net/

Hey Jessica! I went to HCIC in 2017 and found it to be heavily focused on digital marketing, however, I think the landscape has drastically changed since then and there are more social-focused sessions offered. @LeeAase and I will be presenting at this year's HCIC in Orlando! MCSMN will also have a booth, so if you attend, please come see us!

@audreylaine I guess I will see you there this year. Our digital team will be attending…web team, content team, digital marketing and me (social).
