Private social groups for employees
Hi All,
We're looking into starting a private group on social media for staff to connect while they are more scattered — some working from home, some on furlough — during the pandemic. I am interested in any advice or experience you can share with launching and running such a group. I know that we will probably go with Facebook, but are there others we should consider?
Thanks much. Hope you all are doing well and hanging in there.

Hi, see knool.com. They provide for the creation of private forums in which groups can socialise.

We have a group on Yammer.com and Microsoft Teams. However, we do not communicate often. Somehow not many people want to chat or post discussions. What we did is 2 x weekly 30min "coffee break" together online on Webex. This was a really good idea!😊

Hi all, we also tried having a Teams channel open for chatting, but it does not work like that. Online meetings for us work only if you are friends with those on the call, otherwise becomes strange. Also you cannot have too many people on the call – max 6 I would say for it to be some kind of social gathering. We, on the other hand, have a nice employee engagement program with a couple of tracks, one is a fitness track, we work out online in Teams, and run a challenge in an app – we also got firbits for all staff. This is working really well!

Thanks to you all for sharing your experiences. We once had Yammer, but our technology partner has made that an obsolete option. Too bad, b/c many had adapted to using that tool. I love the coffee break idea!

We created several Facebook groups for this purpose – one for our each of our Mayo Clinic group practices in FL, MN and AZ, and also one for each of four Mayo Clinic Health System regions. This has been particularly helpful to enable employees who are not on campus (or are furloughed) to stay connected and support each other.

Looking past the pandemic, it might be helpful to consider LinkedIn instead. Having more staff, and especially clinical staff, engaged on LinkedIn may improve your future recruiting profile, plus the culture of LI may be more professional than FB generally.
