New Directions and New Directors for SMHN

By Lee Aase, Director, Mayo Clinic Social Media Network @LeeAase

In January we announced plans for two 2015 Mayo Clinic Social Media Summits (Rochester, Minn. in June and Brisbane, Australia in September.)

This month we're pleased to announce two more additions, this time to our Social Media Health Network staff: Meredith Gould, Ph.D. as our new Editorial Director and Dan Hinmon as our Community Director.

MGould.Jul2014.CROPPEDMeredith isn't really new. For the last year, she's been in a Jill-of-all-trades contracted staff position for SMHN, writing and editing articles for the Web site, standardizing the curriculum for Social Media Residency and otherwise helping with events. Before that she was one of the original members of our External Advisory Board and one of our first SMHN Platinum Fellows. With Dan moving into his new role, Meredith will be able to focus on website content and leading other writing projects.

Dan Hinmon.BorderDan has been with us for a while, too. His firm, Hive Strategies, became a Network member in 2012. He has volunteered several times as a faculty member for Social Media Residency and presented on building community during our 2014 Member Meeting. He recently joined our External Advisory Board, and now we're glad to be putting him to work in the Community Director role within SMHN. Dan will be cultivating conversations, curating relevant news and working with us to enhance the value of membership.
Colleen Young.BorderTo help Dan re-vision the SMHN community, we've asked Colleen Young, also an Advisory Board member, to conduct an audit of the SMHN site and recommend improvements. We look forward to Colleen's report, and you can expect significant changes as we process her feedback. Speaking of which, we welcome your ideas for improving SMHN, too. Leave your comment below, or reach out to Colleen, Dan, Meredith or me here on the SMHN site or on Twitter.

I'm excited to contribute to the SMHN as Director of Community and so grateful for Lee's vision, Meredith's expertise, and Colleen's insights. Thanks to everyone in the community who is asking and answering such helpful questions. I'm looking forward to helping bring the social revolution to health care!

I'm impressed with Mayo's commitment to make a good thing better. So often organizations start online communities and don't invest in their improvement. But to do it right, iterative improvement should always be part of the plan right from the start - and budgeted for - because you can't really build a community for and with the community until you have members. At inception, one makes presumptions, trying to forecast what members will want and what will push the technical boundaries to enable easy connectivity and organization of user-generated content. Things change quickly in this space.

Now we have our best advisors ever - YOU. I look forward to getting your input, your observations and thoughts to make SMHN work better for you.

Continuing the LoveFest among teammates and beyond. I could not be happier about Dan and Colleen's new roles. Both are longtime colleagues who have become friends whose wisdom and guidance I trust. Both bring extraordinary skills to this next phase of SMHN community development.

As for me, I've come to believe that online digital tools have generated a new and somewhat different set of rules for editorial excellence, so I'm happy to Serve and Correct here. Will continue contacting members about contributing book reviews, commentary and the like, but please feel free to ping me.
