Dear MCSMN members,
Since I joined MCSMN in 2017 and it became of a great deal for me, providing me with support , discussions and experience in a variety of topics I know for sure won't be found in any other place. MCSMN has become an essential reference and tool in my professional life. for which I would like to strengthen our connections to the network and to each other by knowing each other background and areas of expertise and I will start with myself.

I'm a medical graduate, from Egypt

I have MBA degree in International Marketing from ESLSCA business school.

I practice Healtcare Marketing professionally from 2013.

My areas of expertise is Digital Marketing strategies and planning, Product Development and a bit of Branding.

I worked for
Eye Specialized hospitals and centers.
Urgent care center.
Sports medicine center.
Dental practices.
Bariatric center.
Medical and Dental Training center.

Thanks for starting this thread, Dr. Helmi! Where do you currently live and work?

Hello, I am a recent member of MCSMN and am looking forward to the interactions. I work in IT security at a healthcare facility in Rochester, MN. I have an undergraduate degree in network design and management and am currently completing my masters degree in cybersecurity and information assurance. I also hold a CISSP certification and am one of the item writers for the exam along with holing C|EH and CFHI certifications among a few others. I am very interested in the intersections between information security and social media.

Hi Dr. Helmi, I’m a physician in the Seattle area. I was a partner at one of the top multi-specialty clinics in the country (The Everett Clinic recently acquired by Optum) and I was heavily involved in their Social Media and Advanced Tech efforts.

I’ve moved on from clinical practice, and have been diving deeply into two areas within healthcare : the confluence of AI and Ethics. For me, I contend innovation requires cross-disciplinary expertise, so in my case it’s requiring me to rebirth my prior engineering roots and learn Python programming, Deep learning, etc , as I take a slew of courses around ethics (in two weeks I start The Philosophy of Science from Oxford and pre-reading my book as we speak). Effectively although I have an undergraduate degree in engineering, a Masters in Physics, and an MD – for the next 3 years I am an pre-undergraduate in two fields again :0).

So, how does this relate to Social Media? Well, I am convinced that companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Amazon … are really Big Data/ AI companies, and culturally, when they engage in health and healthcare – although technically brilliant – they seem to not understand the human, ethical dimensions of “health”.

Anyway, I think I am about 3 years out from getting a preliminary handle on any of this (or even articulating the right questions!), but what I find super useful about MCSMN in my journey (especially News You Can Use and the discussions, though I also now try to attend every webinar!) is that for 10-30 minutes a day I can keep an eye on a big chunk of the SM/Healthcare space.

How was the decision of leaving the clinical practice? it wasn't easy for me at all, but I felt like I should follow my passion.

It's wonderful knowing that there are brilliant people – like you – out there sharing the same way of thinking.

And also I do agree with you regarding the importance of cross- disciplinary experience in many innovation requiring areas, and it also gives an edge.

Thanks for sharing that.

It was difficult. At about +20 years I probably was at the Sweet spot of experience + learning and I do miss the older patients (especially WW2 vets -always great to talk too), but after my brother died of Multiple Myeloma I took stock of where I was and decided to see if I could contribute in a different (better?) way. Less an existential crisis; rather a decision to leap.

Thanks for starting this discussion @mhelmi! Here's something about myself.

I've spent nearly 30 years managing my own advertising and marketing firm in McMinnville, Oregon – focusing primarily on healthcare. In 2011 I joined the Social Media Network and volunteered to present at social media residencies and our conferences. About 5 years ago @LeeAase asked me to manage this community. I'm the guy to contact if you need help with anything here.

I really enjoy building social and digital communities and have been impressed with the generosity and professionalism of this Network. Working for Mayo Clinic is a dream. I've found amazing people throughout the organization, and to be able to work from the Northwest is remarkable.

In addition, I run Hive Strategies, a firm that provides expert advice for Facebook support groups. I strongly believe in the power of online communities to help patients and their families/supporters through tough times. Anyone can set up a Facebook group, but active management is a skill. Hospitals are not doing enough in this area.

I'm going to challenge 3 MCSMN members to share their stories: @angela_k_moore @bethdavidson @ueharas. Once you've shared, invite 3 more to share!

I’m fascinated by the relationship between digital networks and human networks, and I contend that the strength of the digital network is exponentially related to those people who cross this boundary.

For me, Dan was that person – and for those of you who haven’t yet met him, he’s actually nicer in person than online 😉. He should be one of your “must meets” at the upcoming conference!

Now you're making me blush, @matthewrehrl. I'm honored to be that person for you – and I really would like to meet everyone attending the conference. I'm looking forward to a great event! And thank you for the tremendous contributions you continue to make to this community.

Hi from Mississippi!
For the last 11+ years I've managed my own marketing and advertising agency, Momentum Consulting. We specialize in digital marketing and work with a number of urgent and primary care clinics as well as dentists and optometrists in rural Mississippi. MCSMN has been a great resource for me. I love learning more about what larger healthcare providers are doing when it comes to social and digital media and finding how we can apply some of those tactics in rural areas. One of my goals is to attend Mayo's conference one year, but unfortunately, it won't be this fall.

Greetings! I'm a recent new member of the group. I'm the social media coordinator for Navicent Health, handling messaging and curation of social media content for the entire healthcare system. Before coming here about two years ago, I handled social media within the motorsports marketing side of things and have a traditional journalism background. Looking forward to continuing to gain more insight from the group!
