Contact tracing apps to Combat COVID-19

Our world is in a vulnerable situation caused by the pandemic of COVID-19. It began as a health crisis and now become an economic crisis. To lift up lockdown and re-open the economy, governments of many nations are turning their eyes towards the tech industries for solutions like contact tracing apps and give people a sense of social and health security.

A contact tracing app enhances the countries' control and containment strategies. What are your ideas? What research should be done and what functionalities would you like to see in such apps?

I am fairly concerned with Apple and Google combining forces to develop contact tracing. Although it may be valuable in some limited sense for CoVid19, effectively we will have a system in place which will show who you have been potentially engaging with at nearly all times. Once this system is in place it can be used for other purposes. At a minimum this should be publicly debated- not decided behind the very closed doors of corporations and several government officials.

Equally concerned.
EZ Pass knows your exact location and how long it took you to get from one exit to another. But at least they don't know who was in the car with you.

The health messaging that came out of The Chief Medical Officer of Health in Alberta (Canada) re: their tracing app was very palatable – and seemed to balance the concern for health as well as privacy. I don't live in that province, but I recall wanting to know more about how information was being collected while at the same time protecting privacy (and I also wondered if something like that would come to my province).

There has to be a balanced trade-off between privacy and the health risk of the community. In my opinion, more weight should be given to the health concerns of the community
