7 Countries + 35 States = Great Social Media Week at Mayo Clinic

By Lee Aase, Director, Mayo Clinic Social Media Network @LeeAase

We've just completed our annual Social Media Week at Mayo Clinic, and it was a fantastic learning experience. We had representatives from Australia, Canada, China, the Czech Republic, Japan, Mexico and the Netherlands, as well as U.S. participants from 35 states (click to enlarge):

Thanks to everyone who joined us!

Congratulaations, and best wishes to all.

Why are electoral votes included in the map legend, unless health has become political rather than a human right?

Just a little tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that we had representation from most of the states...and because we used the CNN online presidential election calculator to create the map...it was the easiest way to get a map illustrating what states were represented.

So disappointed that I could not make it this year! Especially after submitting an essay and receiving membership! Do you know the date for next year's Social Media Week? Is there any other way to receive the knowledge that you provided during this week? Thank you! And I truly hope to be a part of this next year!

Dates next year are Oct. 20-24. If you read some of the recap posts we've done here on the Network site you'll get a sense of what was covered. As a Network member you also will have access to all of the curriculum posts and other online events, which we hope to increase in the coming year.

It was a very informative conference. How do I get access to the video archives?

The video archives would be available through Ragan Communications. I don't know what the cost would be, but I'm thinking they will be eventually included in the flat-fee Ragan Training video portal.

Can you explain the program and direction you want to see this go?
Thanks,

Sure...this page has more background on the Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media.

https://socialmedia.mayoclinic.org/about/

Our goal is to encourage thoughtful and constructive adoption of social media tools for health-related purposes, and we hold conferences and provide training to help health care professionals and patients use these tools well. We hope it continues to grow and that we can play a catalyst role in bringing social media effectively into health care.

Great conference - I came back to our Clinic with fantastic examples of what's being done to share as well as ideas we can implement and "Iterate until it's great." Thank you for creating the program and bringing us together.

Also, Mayo's biomechanics laboratory — super cool! Loved that tour.

Glad you could join us! Keep iterating!

Where can attendees/speakers access the presentations (PPT decks)?

It was really great being at the conference. I have not had access to the power points and the survey. I really need them as I would soon be going home to Nigeria and I would love to prepare a detailed report on how social media can help healthcare reform at home. It was also great being at the Mayo clinic.

I loved seeing this map during the conference but I was a bit surprised that 20 others from Pennsylvania were in attendance and I did not meet a single one of them. I would really suggest more post-session networking events in the future. I feel like there was a bit of IRL socialness lacking. Just an idea! 🙂

Thanks for this feedback, Ashley. We heard similar feedback from others as well. We will certainly take that to our meetings when for our future plans.

Yes, thanks Ashley! Like Jason said we have heard this from multiple people and are already putting plans in place to do this at next year's event!
