2009 vs. 2019 Photo Challenge (How-To)

Posted by Kristofer Santos @kristoferkevin, Wed, Jan 16 12:50pm

Hey everyone,

I’m Kevin Santos, digital marketing specialist from Palomar Health in San Diego, CA.

I attended the Social Media Residency last December and am happy to be in a network full of healthcare social media marketers! @LeeAase @DanHinmon

I absolutely love producing content and thought I’d share some of my practices, in this case with the new “2009 vs. 2019” social media trend.

This challenge originally started as a choose your first Facebook profile picture and compare it to now trend, but has now quickly expended to any photo from 2009.

You can do this by finding a photo from 2009, and something today that is similar and editing them into a single side-by-side photo.

Some ideas you can use include: new buildings, remodels, new logos, etc.

You can easily make a side-by-side photo using the “Layouts” app.

Here’s a video of me demonstrating how to use it:

For our hospital, we conveniently were in the process of building a new facility in 2009, so I took advantage of that. (See attached photo).

It’s getting a lot more engagements than is typical.

Hope that helps! Let me know your feedback and if this is valuable content to have on the network 🙂

Cool idea. I hadn't considered how we might jump on this from an organizational perspective. @stacytheobald, @Margaret_Marie, and @audreylaine: What do you think? With all of our construction I would think we might have some before and after photos that would work for this.

Hi Kevin @kristoferkevin – thanks for posting this. Very clever! And thanks for adding the how-to video showing how to use the Layouts app. Do you have other examples you can share – or recommendations about leveraging this current trend?

I love the idea! I'm working on getting some shots of the Florida campus and will connect with @stacytheobald and @Margaret_Marie.

Yes, I think this would be a cool idea as well! Lets get photos and discuss posts.

A nice idea a great for background marketing and branding!

I wonder if it's possible to go to the next step and have employees (nurses, staff, providers etc) to share their 10 year (20 year? 30 year) photos and give a blurb about their story? This could be a fun thing to leverage for recruiting – particularly if backed up by long term retention stats for different employee subgroups. (And consider that possibly the second or third most important content page on your website or social media platform may well be your recruiting page. Why? Because these potential future employees are your future.)

Since I am on my 3rd cup of coffee here in the Pacific Northwest- let me really speculate: consider having patients submit their 10/20/30 year photos and their stories (HIPPA Aporoved of course). This would be about "Hope".

Of course! Happy to share.

Unfortunately, I don't have other examples other than the construction of one of our facilities. I really like the idea @matthewrehrl has down below in the comments about having staff submit their own 2009 vs. 2019 photos!
