Ten Tips to Make the Most of the #MCSMN Annual Conference

By Dr. Katherine Y. Brown @drkatherineybrown

Are you in eager anticipation of the Mayo Clinic Social Media Network Conference? If you have attended before, you know what to expect. However, if you are a first-time attendee, as I was last year, you may be a little bit nervous when you really should be excited. This conference will exceed your expectations.

Here are my top ten tips for you:

  1. Bring positive energy and excitement. This going to be one the best conferences you have ever attended.
  2. Unplug from work and all outside distractions. This conference is about you. Unless you are sharing about what you are learning or tagging a speaker or a new friend, my recommendation is that you connect with the conference. After all, everything else will be waiting for you when you return.
  3. Network and connect. Whether you are coming with others or on your own, meet at least ten new people.
  4. Set a goal to stay connected. It is important to stay connected with people after the conference ends. Follow each other’s pages and commit to liking at least three of their posts over the next two weeks.
  5. Come prepared to learn. The knowledge and wisdom in the room is amazing. Everyone wants you to learn and meet your social media goals. This is one of the safe places where there is no competition and everyone is cheering you on.
  6. Don’t be afraid to ask a question. The dialogue that occurs is powerful and you will learn many new things. Ask questions.
  7. Stretch yourself. Commit to learning at least three new things. Share that information with others when you return home.
  8. Invest in yourself. You have accomplished a great first step by registering for the conference. Do not miss all of the other resources that are available to you. Consider the social media residency. Join the discussion board and follow a blog. This Social Media Network is full of resources. What you put in is what you get out. Take the time to embed yourself in all of the resources.
  9. Don’t rush the process, trust the process. Everyone that comes to the conference is at a different level. Don’t be hard on yourself. Ask questions and find a social media mentor. All will be well. You are connected with some great people.
  10. Thank yourself for committing to your goals. Thank those who made this journey possible.

We all have a message to share. Although we look at the world through different lenses, our collective impact is a shared virtual community of learning.

Be active.

Be engaged.

Be committed.

Be informed.

Be you.

I am excited about meeting each of you and look forward to doing one of my favorite things in life, connecting with positive people who are doing great things. Tweet you soon.
