Top 7 Reasons to Attend the Mayo Clinic Social Media Network Annual Conference

By Dan Hinmon, MCSMN Director

Looking for a healthcare conference devoted entirely to social media? Look no further than the Mayo Clinic Social Media Network Annual Conference. I know, I know. It’s not the catchiest conference title. Our planning committee came very close to naming it SMASH–Social Media Action Summit for Healthcare–but decided against it in the end.

Behind that ordinary name, though, you’ll find an extraordinary experience. Here are the top 7 reasons why you should attend!

#1  Four inspirational keynote addresses (and one more surprise we have in the works). Susannah Fox; Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa; Wen-ying Sylvia Chou, Ph.D.; and Jacob Weiss, Ph.D. Topics range from the magic of storytelling to a framework for dealing with mistrust and misinformation to how you can anticipate the future to learning to juggle.

#2  Fourteen fascinating breakout sessions. Want to know the questions your patients are too embarrassed to ask? How about giving voice to vulnerable populations, LGBTQ, and homeless persons? How are you handling the debate around thoughts and prayers on social? What’s up with chatbots? And how do you get your content ready for voice-activated search? It’s all there. You’re going to have a hard time choosing which breakout to attend.

#3  Hands-on workshops. We’ll teach you tricks for successful Facebook Live broadcasts, developing Facebook ads for big results, and simple tools and tactics for easy video production. Put your learning to work right away.

#4  Small group consultations with social media experts. A dozen social media experts–members of the Mayo Clinic Social and Digital Innovation team and our Social Media Network External Advisory Board members – will be on hand during lunch and networking breaks to meet with you in small groups. Bring your burning questions, or just listen to others.

#5  Two networking receptions and a dine-around. We planned a lot of time for networking. Join our welcome reception Tuesday night at the Mayo Clinic Florida campus. Get to know other conference attendees and join a tour. Our Wednesday night reception will be at our conference venue, Omni Hotel, followed by an optional dine-around. Get ready for the open mic. Come prepared to share your social media horror stories! (No reporters will be present.)

#6  Florida in November! First, an interesting fact: In the past 150 years there have been only two hurricanes in November in Florida. You’re safe! Second, it’s Florida! Great weather and lots to do. Besides Jacksonville highlights, within a couple of hours you’ll find the Kennedy Space Center, cruise ships, Harry Potter, Mickey Mouse, Minions, manatees, and more! The following week is Thanksgiving, so tack on a few days for fun.

#7 Membership in the Social Media Network. This conference is open to everyone–not just our current members. If you’re not already a member, your registration includes a one-year premium membership in the community. If you’re already a member, you get a very nice discount. Either way, you’ll continue learning with our active discussion forum, monthly webinars, regular blog posts, daily curated news, and online Basics for Healthcare certificate.

We’re capping the conference at 150 attendees to create a more intimate environment for learning and sharing– so don’t wait too long to register. Last year we sold out a month before the conference.

Hope to see you there!

I'm really excited to be taking part this year. I'd like to add one more reason to attend – it's a personal one for me and it's about the people you will meet and the contacts you will make. Having been a member of the Social Media Network for a couple of years now, I can honestly say you will not meet a friendlier, more helpful group of marketing colleagues anywhere else in our industry. I am excited to finally meet so many people I met online through the Network in real life – and in Florida – in November! What's not to get excited about!

You're right, @MarieEnnisOConnor. That would be #8. Really looking forward to seeing so many inspirational people this year – including you!
