How Facebook Groups Help Patients Prepare for Medical Encounters

In an earlier post we featured video from Mayo Clinic Cardiac Surgeon Joseph Dearani, M.D., discussion how he has used Facebook pages to provide helpful resources for patients and families considering heart surgery for rare congenital heart defects.

In Part II below, Dr. Dearani discusses how private Facebook groups and other online forums prepare parents and patients for better discussions when they arrive at Mayo Clinic, and also how they help his team better serve patients.

Next week, in the final installment in this series, we'll review an example of an international patient for whom the Mayo Clinic Ebstein's Anomaly Facebook page played a key role in the decision to pursue surgery.
