First Platinum Fellows Named

Last week the Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media (#MCCSM) named the first five Platinum Fellows in the Social Media Health Network (SMHN) as part of Social Media Week at Mayo Clinic. All of the honorees have served as #MCCSM External Advisory Board members.

Ed Bennett was recognized for his service to the health care social media community in creating the Hospital Social Networking List, which has become the community-maintained Health Care Social Media List, a Social Media Health Network resource. Because of a previous commitment, Ed was unable to attend the Member Meeting, so we presented his Platinum certificate on Wednesday during the #MayoRagan Social Media Summit.

Dave DeBronkart (a.k.a. “e-Patient Dave”), a pioneer in patient advocacy, rearranged his travel plans to work in a stop in Rochester, Minn. on the way from Boston to a Friday morning speech in Omaha. He delivered an inspired and inspiring address to the Network members:

Meredith Gould, Ph.D. is an elder in the #hcsm community (really, she’ll take that as a compliment!) who greatly assisted #MCCSM in its infancy. She also spearheaded the production of our first book, Bringing the Social Media Revolution to Health Care. She also has been a leader in the related field of church social media (#chsocm), and was unable to join us in person because of a speaking commitment, but sent her greetings:

Wendy Sue Swanson, M.D. (a.k.a. @SeattleMamaDoc) has served as a keynote speaker at two of our conferences and has been part of the Social Media Residency faculty. She is a pediatrician and blogger who has been a champion for giving employed physicians protected time to create and curate online health resources. A meeting conflict kept her from attending Social Media Week at Mayo Clinic, so she produced this video:

Bryan Vartabedian, M.D. (a.k.a. @Doctor_V) is a newer member of the #MCCSM External Advisory Board, but previously worked with us on projects relating to online professionalism, such as this YouTube video. Dr. Vartabedian is a pediatric gastroenterologist whose 33 Charts blog has established his thought leadership in physician engagement in social media conversations. He has twice served as a Chief Resident for Social Media Residency, and delivered the closing keynote for this year’s #MayoRagan Social Media Summit. Here were his remarks Thursday evening during the Platinum Fellow induction ceremony:

Platinum Fellow designation is the highest honor bestowed through the SMHN Social Media Fellows program. Platinum fellows have demonstrated leadership and sustained commitment to the #MCCSM goals of applying social media tools to promote health, fight disease and improve health care.

Yes! I do take being characterized as “an elder” as a compliment. In the world of social media, this has nothing to do with chronological age, but with time spent learning about and working with digital platforms.

Like epatient Dave and Ed Bennett (and probably many others in this community), I’ve been involved with social media since the early 1990s, before it was considered social media (e.g., chat room/communities on Compuserve, bulletin boards, etc.). What’s happening right now is remarkable and I’ve been thinking a lot lately (and shared with Lee) about what it means to be an “elder” in this context. What are responsibilities and roles i/c/w mentoring and supporting newcomers? Stay tuned. I’ll have more to say!

Congratulations, all! With special thanks to Dr. Swanson for her role at The Everett Clinic — so great to have a physician leader in the social media realm. And to Dr. Vartabedian for his closing keynote on public medicine at the social media summit — much appreciated insight.
