Four Potential Bottom-Line Benefits of Social Media in Health Care

Wendy Sue Swanson, M.D., a member of our Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media Advisory Board, served on the faculty for our Social Media Residency in Seattle, hosted by Swedish Health Services.

In her Tuesday morning presentations, Dr. Swanson discussed ways to encourage physician involvement in social media. Afterward, she reflected on the importance of getting physicians engaged, and four specific areas of potential benefit:

Dr. Swanson believes social media advocates should focus on documenting benefits in these areas, to help gain financial support and physician reimbursement for participating in health care social media initiatives:

  1. Increased patient satisfaction
  2. Decreased hospital readmission
  3. Decreased triage time (repeat calls)
  4. Increased compliance with care plans resulting from better communication before, during and after the office consultation. As patients have more information and are able to have better conversations with their providers about the pros and cons of each treatment approach, their buy-in and commitment to the mutually agreed care plan will be higher.

The Seattle cohort of Social Media Residency concludes this morning with participants developing plans for their own social media initiatives, including how to measure their impact.
