"SCAD Ladies" Highlight Social Media Summit

Two women with a rare heart condition whose online connections and initiative led to a pilot study by a Mayo Clinic cardiologist will be featured Oct. 18 in a keynote panel at Mayo Clinic's Social Media Summit in Rochester, Minn.

Katherine Leon and Laura Haywood-Cory both had heart attacks due to Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD). Their interest, combined with the online community they had gathered, encouraged Sharonne Hayes, M.D. to develop a pilot study published last month in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, as well as two larger ongoing SCAD studies. The patients will join Dr. Hayes and Dr. Marysia Tweet in the Tuesday noon keynote panel at the Summit to discuss how social networking sites can help spur research into rare diseases.

The Social Media Summit, produced in collaboration with Ragan Communications, is part of a full week of health care social media learning and networking opportunities at Mayo Clinic, Oct. 17-21, 2011. Other events include the Member Meeting of the Social Media Health Network and Mayo's first Social Media Residency. More than 350 participants from throughout the U.S. and Canada are expected to attend the Summit, and registration is still open.
