Center names new Medical Director

We’re pleased to announce that Farris Timimi, M.D., has been named the new Medical Director for the Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media, succeeding Dr. Victor Montori, who has served as Medical Director since the Center’s inception.

Mayo Clinic created its Center for Social Media in July 2010 to accelerate the effective application of social media tools throughout Mayo Clinic and to spur broader and deeper engagement in social media by Mayo Clinic employees, health care organizations, medical professionals and patients to improve health and communication globally through the Social Media Health Network.

Dr. Montori, who served as Medical Director in a volunteer capacity, reflects on the progress the center has made in its first 17 months:

Dr. Timimi is a Consultant in the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases, Department of Medicine; an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic; and currently serves on the Internal Advisory Group for the Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media. In his new role as Medical Director, he will have dedicated time to provide physician leadership for the center’s initiatives.

Dr. Timimi describes how his interest in the social media position is a natural extension of his work to strengthen the patient voice in health care at Mayo Clinic:

Please join us in thanking Dr. Montori for his volunteer leadership in helping us get to this point, and in welcoming Dr. Timimi to his new role.

And be sure to follow him on Twitter, too!

  1. Dr. Timimi captured my interest from the get-go of this interview. He won my heart when he characterized Patient-Family Advisory Councils as “elegant constructs” and talked about “productive engagement with providers.” And oh the beauty of video . . . his enthusiasm, commitment, and delight is gloriously visible. Onward!
