Patient, Caregiver Social Media Summit Scholarships: Cast Your Votes!

The response to our invitation to apply for one of five scholarships to attend our Social Media Social Media Summit and Social Media Residency has been wildly beyond our expectations.

As of last Friday we had received 18 applications, which we thought was an excellent response, but by last night’s midnight CDT deadline the ranks of applicants had nearly doubled: we now have 35 candidates who have submitted essays!

Scholarship recipients will receive air travel and lodging reimbursement to attend the Social Media Summit and the Social Media Residency during the week of Oct. 17-21, 2011. They also will participate in a patient/caregiver panel on Oct. 19 at the member meeting of the Social Media Health Network.

We’re asking your help to narrow the field of applicants to 15 finalists. Just go to our Mayo Clinic online community (you’ll need to register, but it’s free) and browse through the candidates’ essays. You can vote for the ones you think would be best by giving them the thumbs up or by sharing your comments.

The deadline for voting is midnight CDT Wednesday, Aug. 17. After that, our panel of judges will vote to select the five scholarship recipients from among the 15 finalists.

Please check out the essays and vote for your favorites. You can only vote once per candidate, but you can vote for as many candidates as you’d like. I’m sure you’ll find them all inspiring.

I think there has never been a better time for healthcare systems to get involved in social media on behalf of the patients they serve. As a nurse and founder of a patient support group, Kari Ulrich posesses the unique combination of health care professional and patient health advocate. She continues to provide quality and essential health care information with patients through a wide varity of social media. This pertinent information extends to patients in small midwestern towns, throughout the United States, and includes patients in many foreign countries. It would be in Mayo Clinic’s best interestes to enlist the help of this nurse and patient care advocate, Kari Ulrich, to initiate and broaden social media venues in the health care setting. Social media has the ability to touch so many lives.

  4. Below is a link to my essay. As of tis morning I had 1 like as I didn’t realize the essay’s were posted for crowd sourcing. I got on the ball and tweeted my post and shared it on G+, plus I blogged and emailed friends. I saw the number’s of “likes” climb through the day. Sadly many “liked” my essay without taking the time to register..so their votes won’t count. But it looks like I now have maybe 37 “likes” I am hoping this puts me in the top 15.. as Social Media is my Passion. We were at Mayo last year for the Trigeminal Neuralgia conference.. and LOVED it. Loved the history and philosophy this institution has in regards to every patient who comes through the doors. It’s beautifully unique really how Mayo handles the huge load of patients that come their way. Yet everyone is diagnosed and treated on the same trip if possible. And now to know that they “know” the significance of social media… I’m so excited. They “get” it. And I very much want to be a part of it. Hey the Art displayed at Mayo alone is a visual of the depth of caaring that goes on in this most prestigious institution. Here’s the link to my essay
